*This chapter talks about narrative, nonfiction or expository, and poetry and the factors, or features, of text that, if taught, will aid in student comprehension
Read Ch. 8 –Promoting Comprehension: Text Factors
Print and read through grade 3-8 Common Core Reading standards for informational, narrative and poetry
Assignment for Ch. 8 – Design a mini-lesson for a reading workshop classroom using one of the text types, and a factor of the text as your objective: (*REMEMBER this COULD and SHOULD be a part of your unit plan.Finding a way to incorporate it will allow you to be effective with your time management If you choose not to include in your unit plan, than it is a separate assignment and you still must complete.
FIRST,watch the video belo on a reading mini-lesson with Rick and all the components of a good mini-lesson. It is based on theories of characters (page 211 in your text). Design your mini-lesson around a similar structure.
Remember mini-lesson must (see attached template)
remain focused with ONE explicit teaching point, based around a CCSS - It should start with SWBAT (as you have been in your unit plan)
include modeling, through the use of a mentor text (a picture book or other short story for modeling your text factor)
have scaffolding - whole group, guided practice and discussion,(which will take approx. 15 minutes in your mini-lesson)
independent practice for the reading time (approx. 20 minutes) - RICK's video does NOT show this component
